national day of prayer

national day of prayer

President Barack Obama at least made the atheists happy with his decision to boycott Thursday's National Day of Prayer ceremonies.

Breaking with recent tradition, Obama won't host an event at the White House. His excuse?

He prays privately, according to White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.

At least Obama will sign a proclamation recognizing the day.

Obama's boycott has upset many supporters of the event, which is for people of all faiths.

Still, it's worth pointing out that some of the more conservative religious leaders have been big proponents of the cause.

That helped explain why former President George W. Bush was such an active participant, including hosting an event annually that featured leaders from many faiths.

Obama's lack of participation will irk a number of people for a few days, and cause them to wonder about how dedicated he is to his religious beliefs.

Other than that, Obama will get a pass from the majority of Americans who chant the mantra that state and religion need to remain separate.
