gary dell abate first pitch
Well, Met fans, that was quite a weekend. While the Pirates are barely a major league team, it was nice to see the Mets actually kick someone when they are down. Of course, it took until the 8th inning Friday night to get it going, but we’ll take it.
A few highlights of the 3-game sweep:
• Jose Reyes looks as if he’s finally ready to get going. He had a great series, and guess what, when he does well, the Mets do well. It’s that simple.
• The starting pitching was strong. Niese did what Oliver Perez can’t do - kept us in a game - while Maine and Livan continued to go deep into games. Again, it’s only the Pirates, but even a few weeks ago, the Mets - at best - take two of three from a team like that.
• Sean Green continued to stink. While that disaster in Philly last weekend was painful, at least it let everyone know this guy can’t be trusted in a big game. Parnell has been strong, Feliciano got the job done, and my new favorite Met - Ken Takahashi - continues to pitch well. By the way, Takahashi is the second Met to wear No. 36 this year. The great Darren O’Day also wore it. I hope No. 36 fares much better than No. 6 did last year, when four different Mets (Gustavo Molina, Nick Evans, Trot Nixon and Abraham Nunez) wore it. Actually, Evans had two stints with No. 6.
• Gary Dell’Abate (we all know him as Baba Booey) from the Howard Stern show delivered what has to be the most embarrassing ceremonial first pitch in baseball history Saturday. He had been talking for weeks on the Stern show about doing this, and Saturday he finally got his shot. The video is below. While it's pretty bad, he may actually be better than Perez and Green combined. If you look closely, you can see Stern sidekick Artie Lange - a Met hater - to the far left during the pitch.
In all seriousness, Dell’Abate - a big Mets fan - was at Citi Field as a celebrity guest for Autism Awareness day, which is not only a great cause, but one that is very dear to my heart. Good job, Gary.
