Depeche Mode’s concert in Athens, Greece, was canceled today, May 12th, after lead singer Dave Gahan reportedly fell ill and was forced to go to the hospital, Reuters reports. “We regret today’s performance has to be canceled… David Gahan fell ill in his dressing room,” a concert organizer told the audience of 20,000 at the Greek capital’s Terra Vibe Park. Details are sketchy, but Gahan was reportedly “rushed” to the hospital. According to the AFP, organizers hinted that Gahan might have suffered from “suspected gastroenteritis” and could potentially perform tomorrow if his condition improved, but no official word has been issued.
The band is currently on tour to promote new album Sounds of the Universe; concerts are booked through 2010. Most notably, the synth-rock icons are also scheduled to headline a night at this year’s Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago. No word whether Gahan’s illness will result in more cancellations. Stay tuned to Rock Daily for more information as it comes in.
Last month, Depeche Mode drew more than 12,000 fans to their performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, which was the largest crowd the show had ever seen since launching in 2003.
